Propeller is a digital health platform that helps people with asthma or COPD manage their condition in partnership with their doctor. Bluetooth sensors attach to patients’ existing inhalers allowing them to better self-manage their illness by delivering insights on medication use, symptoms, triggers and environmental factors to their Propeller smartphone app. This data is also integrated into Cerner so that care teams can easily monitor patients’ medication usage and intervene proactively.
Use Cases
- Patients enrolled in Propeller receive Bluetooth sensors that attach to their inhalers as well as access to the Propeller app, which captures their medication usage trends. The app provides additional information to help them control their asthma or COPD, including a personalized forecast based on the environmental factors at their location. And if a patient’s rescue inhaler usage spikes, the app alerts them to contact their clinician.
- For physicians, Propeller provides objective data on patients’ medication usage and changes to their adherence patterns or control state, helping easily identify patients at greater risk of exacerbation. Insights from this data enable healthcare providers to have more meaningful and tailored conversations with their patients about treatment. It also allows them to make more informed decisions related to step-up therapy.
- Care managers can use Propeller to monitor the well-being of a large population of asthma and COPD patients. In Propeller, they can view the medication usage data and control status of all patients enrolled in the program. That data can be organized so that patients at the highest risk of hospitalization are prioritized and proactively contacted by the care team, ultimately improving the level of care the patient receives.
- For population health experts and healthcare executives, Propeller provides aggregated data on medication usage among patients with asthma or COPD. This data can be used to improve and monitor outcomes at the community level, thereby providing higher quality care at a lower cost to their organization.

Key Features

Inhaler Sensors:
Propeller Bluetooth sensors attach to patients’ existing medications and sync with the Propeller app to capture medication usage passively. The sensors also have a chime feature that reminds patients to take their medication, as well as a Find My Inhaler feature that helps patients locate a misplaced inhaler.

Patient App:
The Propeller app is the patient-facing experience of the platform. It provides patients with insights around their medication usage and symptoms, while also providing additional features such as medication reminders and daily asthma outlooks that can help people better prepare for their day.

Cerner Data Visualization:
Propeller uses graphs and other visual elements to display patients’ longitudinal data in a way that clinicians can quickly and easily review and interpret. Beyond medication usage data, clinicians have access to data on symptoms, triggers, and Asthma Control Test/ COPD Assessment Test scores.

Care Team Notifications:
Care teams will receive notifications for patients who need additional support so that they can intervene before the patient requires more urgent care. Notifications focus on patients who have poor adherence to their controller medication or who may be at risk for an exacerbation.
