DynaMed Decisions offers a robust suite of tools that address topics ranging from preference-sensitive patient decisions to complex clinical scenarios and provides individualized risk profiles and customized clinical guidance allowing providers to deliver effective, efficient, patient-centered and personalized care. The evidence-based tools are created by a team of clinical experts who continuously monitor the latest evidence and update the content as needed. DynaMed Decisions can be integrated with Cerner via SMART on FHIR HL7 standards and connects directly to the patient's chart to personalize care while saving the clinician valuable time.
- A 13-year-old patient with acute pharyngitis has a fever and tender anterior cervical nodes, but no cough, and no tonsillar swelling. Strep testing is not available in this urgent care and the patient has a penicillin allergy. Using the DynaMed Decisions Acute Pharyngitis tool, the high score suggests value in starting empiric antibiotics. The clinician chooses cephalexin 500 mg twice daily as one of a few appropriate choices offered by the tool for penicillin allergy.
- A primary care clinician sees a person in her late 40s with an elevated LDL cholesterol and few other risk factors. Using the DynaMed Decisions Cardiovascular Risk tool, it becomes clear that the absolute benefit of statins is less than 1% over 10 years. Showing these personalized data to the patient during shared decision-making allows a simple decision to wait on statins for now.
- A 66-year-old current smoker sees her physician to discuss the value of lung cancer screening with CT scans. After using the DynaMed Decisions Lung Cancer Screening tool, she learns that her risk is a bit below the average risk in the trials. She also learns that CT scan screening could save 4 of 1,000 people from a lung cancer death, but that quitting smoking today can keep 8 of 1,000 people from getting lung cancer at all. Given this information, she chooses to quit smoking and declines CT scan screening.
- A 53-year-old woman has not been getting regular screening mammograms and would like to discuss the benefits and harms with her physician. Prior to the visit, a member of the clinician’s office staff sends her a DynaMed Decisions Option Grid that is customized for her age group for review. At the time of the visit, her physician uses the DynaMed Decisions tool to show her how her personal risk of breast cancer compares with the median risk in clinical trials. She is also shown graphical representations of benefits and harms of screening. Given this rich discussion and information, she is very satisfied with the decision she makes and confident that it matches her values.
